Tesla surges after earnings beat, vows to sell more than half a million vehicles this year

Tesla says Model Y production ramp has started  Tesla Chief Executive Elon Musk at the “Gigafactory” in Shanghai earlier this month. Tesla Inc. stock rallied 12% late Wednesday after the Silicon Valley car maker reported quarterly earnings that topped Wall Street views and set a goal to “comfortably” sell more than 500,000 vehicles this year. Tesla  TSLA,  +2.49%   said it earned $105 million, or 56 cents a share, in the fourth quarter, compared with $140 million, or 78 cents a share, in the year-ago quarter. Adjusted for one-time items, the company earned $2.14 a share, compared with $2 a share a year ago. Revenue rose 2% to $7.4 billion, compared with $7.2 billion a year ago. Analysts polled by FactSet had expected the car maker to report adjusted earnings of $1.77 a share on sales of $7 billion. President Muhammadu Buhari The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), has dismissed the claim by a former Minister of Defence, Gen. T.Y. Danjuma (retd.), that Nigeria under his watch is in deep rot. Ondo govt, workers reach agreement on N30,000 minimum wage

The Ondo Government and Labour Unions in the state have just signed an agreement on the N30,000 minimum wage template for workers in the state. The agreement was signed at the office of the state head of Service, Mr Dare Aragbaye after weeks of deliberations. The State Chairman of Nigeria Labour Congress NLC, Sunday Adeleye said all interests were protected before reaching the agreement. While commending the state government for its prompt action, the NLC chairman said workers in the state are delighted. The payment of the new minimum wage takes effect from January as workers will be paid by month end.

Three Eiye Cultists Arrested With Charm In Lagos

Three suspected members of Eiye Confraternity cult group alleged to have been terrorizing and attacking residents of Odunfa Street area in Lagos Island have been apprehended by operatives of the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad, FSARS. Police identified the arrested suspects as Qudus Davies, 29; Rasheed Okanlawan Ojo, 23 and Lakan Daurd, 23. Alhaji fatai Yusuf aka oko oloyun Alhaji Fatai Yusuf aka Oko Oloyun was shot dead in his vehicle along Eruwa-Igboora Road in the Ibarapa Central area of Oyo.  The police stated that Oko Oloyun's death may be connected to the fraud case in his Lagos office. 24 hours after the assassination of popular traditional medicine expert, Alhaji Fatai Yusuf, popularly known as Oko Oloyun, the Oyo Police Command says it has commenced investigation into the murder and that it probably has a clue on why he was gunned down. Oko Oloyun was on Thursday, January 23, 2020, shot dead by some yet-to-be-identified gunmen. Parents, Students Lament High ‘Acceptance Fee’ In Public Universities

Acceptance fee for some schools Parents and some newly admitted students have decried multiple charges by public universities in the country, payment of high ‘acceptance fees’ alongside other moneys demanded during registration. Daily Trust reports that many federal and state universities charge over N50,000 from each prospective student as acceptance fee prior to “screening” that will pave way for the student to register. In some universities, the money paid for registration is between N35,000 and N40,000. This is besides what they pay as registration which comes with different subheadings.   Officials in some universities said acceptance fee is meant to confirm that prospective students have accepted the admission offered them and are willing to proceed with registration and other procedures. Omoyele Sowore A yet to be identified man, who neighbours claimed to be mentally challenged, on Sunday morning found his way into the temporary abode of recently released pro-democracy campaigner and journalist, Omoyele Sowore, in Abuja, assaulting a female activist and vandalising electronic items in the process. The unknown man, who sneaked into the apartment at about 11:00am, went straight into the living room and sat comfortably in front of the television set as if in his house. Minutes later, he walked into the kitchen but was challenged by a few of Sowore's friends inside the house. He ignored the individuals, walked to the back of the house, paced to the front of the building before activists around the place challenged him. The South west security outfit code named Amotekun has received the backing of PDP Presidential candidate in the last general  election Atiku Abubakar. In a statement issued, the former vice president noted that the policing administration has been stretched to its limit thus the need for state/community input to address the rapidly growing challenges of insecurity and crime. He said “It is obvious that current levels of insecurity in the country are giving rise to major initiatives such as Amotekun and the issue need not be controversial in the first place.” “When local police structures are closest to the grassroots, emergency response will be more effective than the current unwieldy chain of command that renders local government chairmen ineffective when their people are under attacks.”

Five persons confirmed dead in Abule Egba pipeline explosion

Five people are confirmed to have died in the pipeline explosion that occured in the Abule Egba/Ekoro area of Lagos on Sunday  night. The Lagos State Emergency Response Agency, LASEMA and other First Responders who mobilized to the scene activated the State’s Emergency Response Plan and have successfully put out the fire. Investigations revealed that the inferno was as a result of pipeline vandalisation. Supply to the valve where the petroleum products emanated from had to be stopped cutting off supply to the vandalised pipeline from the NNPC Station. Nine Burnt to Death In Ogun Bus Accident

No fewer than nine persons have been burnt to death, while three others sustained varying degrees of injuries in a commercial bus explosion which  occurred at Ijebu Ife along the Ore-Ijebu Ode-Sagamu Road in Ogun State. The Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps, Ogun State Command, Clement Oladele, confirmed the incident. He said it was a case of a fire outbreak involving a Toyota Hiace Commercial Bus while on motion with 19 passengers. Mr Oladele stated that some passengers were rescued from the raging inferno, while others as of the time of this report are still trapped in the burning vehicle. He also stated that the injured victims were rescued to a nearby hospital, for immediate medical attention. Source: TVCnews

Buhari to attend UK-Africa Investment Summit in London

President Muhammadu Buhari will depart Abuja for London on Friday to participate in the inaugural UK-Africa Investment Summit. The Summit which holds on 20th of January is expected to bring together African leaders, international business chief executives and heads of international organisations “to create new partnerships that will deliver more investments to African countries and the United Kingdom. Issues of Sustainable Finance and Infrastructure;Trade and Investment; Future African Growth Sectors and Clean Energy and Climate, are expected to dominate presentations and discussions during the Summit. President Buhari will hold a meeting with the Head of the Commonwealth, Prince Charles in Glasgow, Scotland and also have bilateral meetings with the UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson as well as heads of multilateral organisations. He is expected back in Abuja next Thursday.
