Champions League: Arteta speaks on Guardiola’s ban causing City’s 2-1 defeat to Lyon

Image
Manchester City assistant coach, Mikel Arteta, has said they were punished for a poor start, as their Champions League campaign got off on the wrong foot with a shock 2-1 home defeat to Lyon. He, however, said Pep Guardiola’s absence was not the reason for the poor outing. Arteta was in temporary charge with Guardiola serving a touchline ban and said his side started slowly, as they lost their fourth consecutive Champions League game. “We started a bit slow and we were inconsistent in the way we tried to play. “We lost many duels that at this level you pay the price for. “When we opened up on the first phase we gave the ball away. They took advantage and scored twice but after that the reaction of the lads was superb. “The second half we tweaked a few things to try to control better the counters and have an extra man in midfield and I think we created the chances but we couldn’t get back in the game and at this level it’s not good enough,” Arteta told the post-game news ...

New minimum wage: Nationwide strike begins September 26 – NLC

Image
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has said its members will commence nationwide strike alongside civil society organisations on September 26 unless the tripartite committee completes its assignment on the new minimum wage. NLC President, Comrade Ayuba Wabba, made the declaration on Wednesday after a National Executive Council meeting. Wabba lamented that the federal government had failed to show seriousness in implementing the new wage. “NEC noted that this is against the principle of collective bargaining as provided in ILO conventions 98 and 131on minimum wage setting process, which Nigeria had domesticated”, he said in a statement. “NEC has resolved that at the expiration of the 14 days industrial action notice issued to the federal government over the new minimum wage issue, and the demand of the organised labour was not met, NEC has given NAC and the leadership of organised labour the power to declare appropriate industrial action or any action it deems necessary. “NE...

Champions League: ‘They’re trying to destroy him’ – Ronaldo’s sister reacts to red card

Image
Katia Aveiro, the sister of Cristiano Ronaldo, has lashed out at her brother’s critics following Wednesday’s red card, accusing them of trying to destroy him, while promising that justice will be served. Ronaldo’s European debut in Juventus colours ended prematurely against Valencia, when he received his marching orders after just 29 minutes. The Portugal captain was sanctioned for grabbing Jeison Murillo’s hair while the Colombian defender was on the floor, having previously fallen after a clash with Ronaldo. Ronaldo left the Mestalla pitch in tears, to watch the rest of the match from the dressing room, as Juventus triumphed 2-0 thanks to two penalties converted by Miralem Pjanic. The 33-year-old now faces a ban from the Champions League group stage, but his sister believes he will bounce back. “Football’s shame… justice will be served. “They want to destroy my brother but God never rests. Shameful,” Katia Aveiro wrote on her Instagram account.

Image
Former Arsenal striker, Charlie Nicholas has predicted that Liverpool would play a 2-2 draw against Paris Saints-Germain in today’s UEFA Champions League clash at Anfield. Nicholas, however, tipped PSG forward, Neymar and Liverpool striker, Roberto Firmino to score for their teams. Liverpool head to the game following a 2-1 victory against Tottenham Hotspur in their last Premier League encounter played over the weekend. PSG, on the other hand, defeated St Etienne 4-0 in their last Ligue 1 fixture on Friday. Speaking to Sky Sports, Nicholas said: “It is an absolute belter of a game in all honesty. PSG, on their day, are probably as good as you have ever seen and I include Barcelona in that. They just do not quite do it all the time, as regularly as Barca did in the past. “Liverpool more than deserved to win at the weekend but I do not think it was as sparkling up front as what it has been. Salah is just a little bit edgy and a little bit self-indulgent in certain circumstan...

The two clubs have each approved a request submitted to the Spanish Football Federation for the match to be played at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami on January 26. It was originally scheduled as a home game for Girona, at their Estadi Montilivi. The idea has proven controversial. Girona would be surrendering the advantages of playing at their own home ground, which in theory could benefit Barcelona. Infantino said on Tuesday: “I think I would prefe...

Game Of Thrones’ Takes Top Prize At Emmys

Image
HBO’s record-breaking fantasy epic “Game of Thrones” stormed back onto the Emmys stage on Monday, winning the coveted best drama series prize on a night full of surprises, including an on-air marriage proposal that stunned the audience. The other big story of the Hollywood gala, television’s answer to the Oscars, was the huge success of “The Marvelous Mrs Maisel,” Amazon’s story of a 1950s housewife-turned-stand-up comic, which took home eight Emmys overall, including the best comedy award. “The Handmaid’s Tale” — last year’s best drama and an early favourite for more hardware in 2018 — went home empty-handed from the star-studded event at the Microsoft Theater, after winning three minor awards handed out a week ago. The ceremony hosted by “Saturday Night Live” regulars Colin Jost and Michael Che took on a decidedly political hue at the start, with a barrage of edgy jokes on hot-button issues from diversity in Hollywood to #MeToo and Donald Trump. I'm Sure Liverpool Can Win The Champions League - Salah

Image
Mohammed salah Mohamed Salah is bullish about Liverpool’s chances in the Champions League this season and has backed his team to go all the way to the final again and win this time around. The Reds have started the season in immaculate form, with their victory over Tottenham at Wembley on Saturday simply continuing a perfect beginning to the campaign for Jurgen Klopp’s men, who have yet to drop points in the Premier League. On Tuesday, they begin their quest for European success with a home match against Paris Saint-Germain, four months after falling at the final hurdle in Kiev, when they were defeated 3-1 by Real Madrid. Salah was unable to play a full role in that match, having sustained a shoulder injury in a collision early on with Sergio Ramos, but he does not necessarily think that he has missed out on a once-in-a-lifetime experience. “We played against teams who had won the title before and we still managed to reach the final, so of course we can do it,”  he t...

Champions League: Gary Lineker makes predictions for Man Utd, Liverpool, Man City

Image
Gary lineker Former Barcelona and Leicester City star, Gary Lineker, is optimistic that the Premier League sides will go far in this season’s Champions League. Manchester United, Manchester City, Liverpool and Tottenham are all representing England in the competition and aiming to reach the final at the Wanda Metropolitano in May. “I think the English sides will do well, they’ve got a lot better after a bad spell. “I think with their style of play Liverpool will go far again and obviously Man City will have to be one of the favourites amongst the usual suspects,” Lineker told BT Sport. Lineker however is not sure about United’s ability to challenge for silverware in Europe, because of Jose Mourinho’s tactics. “Jose has a formula of playing and I don’t think he’s going to change it. “It’s going to be fascinating, his third season there too! He doesn’t seem to be the happiest of souls. “The game has evolved; it’s far more open and attacking. We witnessed that in t...

Liverpool vs PSG: Tuchel declines comment on Neymar’s role

Image
Neymar Paris Saint-Germain manager, Thomas Tuchel, has refused to reveal what position Neymar might play against Liverpool tonight. Liverpool welcome the Ligue 1 champions to Anfield for their Champions League opener on Tuesday night. Reds boss, Jurgen Klopp, had already talked of the importance of  stopping the supply to Neymar, with the Brazilian  operating as a No.10, centre-forward and left winger for PSG this season. Tuchel would not say what Neymar’s role will be against the Reds, but confirmed that the Brazilian would start the game. “I will not tell, of course,” Tuchel said when asked where Neymar might play. “What is sure is that he will play, but in which role, I will not tell. “It’s never a risk to trust (Angel) Di Maria. In which role though, same as Neymar – I cannot tell you. It would make it very easy for Liverpool to prepare.”

Ronaldo speaks on scoring first Juventus goals

Image
Christiano Ronaldo Cristiano Ronaldo has admitted he was relieved to have finally broken his goalscoring duck for Juventus. The former Real Madrid superstar joined Juventus in one of the biggest deals of the summer but had drawn blanks in his first Serie A games against Chievo, Lazio and Parma. However, Ronaldo ended the wait for his first goal in the second half against Sassuolo, before adding a second effort in the 65th minute. Having been a prolific goalscorer at Real, Ronaldo revealed he carried a lot of tension into recent games, with so much expectation on him. He told Sky Sports Italia: “I’m very happy, we started well. Sassuolo defend well, but we put in an intense performance and deserved to win. “I really wanted to score these first goals and I’m happy to have found the net.” Ronaldo could have finished the game with a hat-trick but missed several opportunities to extend Juve’s lead. But the 33-year-old insisted he was not concerned with missing his mark on...

UEFA Champions League 2018/19: Benzema predicts club that will win trophy

Image
Karim benzema According to Benzema, Real Madrid are still favourite to win this season’s Champions League trophy despite losing their all-time highest goalscorer, Cristiano Ronaldo to Juventus in the summer. Madrid won the Europe topflight football competition for the past three consecutive years with Ronaldo before the 33-year-old left the Santiago Bernabeu to join Juve in a 100-million-euro deal earlier in the summer. “This competition is another level, all the matches are important, there is no easy one, and it’s one thing I like: Real Madrid is the best club in the world, every year you have to succeed,” Benzema told Codere, per AS. “We know there are a lot of strong rivals, but if I have to say a favourite, it’s always going to be Real Madrid, in this club the goal is always to try to win everything and play well, we have to sacrifice a lot to always be victorious.” Real Madrid kick off the defence of their European crown on Wednesday when they host Roma at Santiago B...

Neymar smart to protect himself from injury – Klopp

Image
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp defended Neymar’s play-acting at the World Cup and believes it will be impossible to completely snuff out the Brazilian’s threat when Paris Saint-Germain visit Anfield in the Champions League on Tuesday. Paris Saint-Germain’s Brazilian forward Neymar celebrates after scoring a goal during the French L1 football match between Paris Saint-Germain and Caen on August 12, 2018 at the Parc des Princes, in Paris. / AFP PHOTO Klopp insisted Neymar wasn’t fully fit in Russia after breaking a bone in his foot in February that forced him to miss the rest of the club season with the French giants before the World Cup. However, the world’s most expensive player earned few plaudits for his performances and became a figure of fun for his constant feigning of injury as Brazil crashed out at the quarter-finals to Belgium. “When I saw a few games at the World Cup and I know people are talking about that and it looked like he made a bit more of situations. Ronaldo ends 320-minute wait for first Juventus goal

Image
The Portuguese superstar is up and running as a Bianconeri player, with his account opened during a Serie A clash with Sassuolo on Sunday. Cristiano Ronaldo has ended a 320-minute wait for his first Juventus goal by netting against Sassuolo. The Portuguese superstar secured a €100 million (£89m/$116m) move to Turin over the summer after opting to bring a nine-year stint with Real Madrid to a close. He arrived in Italy as one of the most prolific marksmen of all time, but has had to be patient in a bid to open his account for the Bianconeri. That wait has now come to a close, with Ronaldo finding the target in his fourth Serie A outing. His barren run had stretched beyond the 300-minute mark during a goalless first-half at the Allianz Stadium, but he did not have to wait long to make his mark after the interval. In the 50th minute, he found himself in the right place at the right time to prod home. Sassuolo made a mess of clearing their lines from a corner, with the ball r...
